What is ayahuasca?
Much is said and little is known about this ancient plant that everyone talks about; We tell you what it is, what it produces, what the risks are
During my month-long stay in Colombia, I did not join the thousands of backpackers who were carried away by the most famous product in the country: cocaine. But they did sell me the idea of ayahuasca.
I was intrigued by the fact that for centuries indigenous South American societies had used this "master plant" in regular rituals.
Ayahuasca, also known as yagé, is a mixture of two plants - the ayahuasca vine (Banisteriopsis caapi) and a shrub called chacruna (Psychotria viridis), which contains the hallucinogen dimethyltryptamine (DMT).The truth is that ayahuasca is super old and was already used by indigenous peoples thousands of years ago. Several anthropologists say that the trend has to do with the beginning of a "new consciousness . "
The lawyer Carlos Martínez Sarasola explains: "Just as in its time the West opened itself to Eastern wisdom, now many sectors are turning their eyes to America, the indigenous world and its spiritual worldview." Of course: the plant is not for everyone, and you have to get good advice about it. Here are some things to keep in mind. Soul-Herbs.com
What is ayahuasca
"Ayahuasca" is a Quechua word that means "liana or rope of the spirits" . It is a preparation made with plants that grow in the Amazon: one is ayahuasca –which is a liana– and the other is chacruna –a shrub with long green leaves. To reach the final drink, the mixture is cooked with water for several hours .
The incredible thing is that four thousand years ago, and without any chemical knowledge, the Amazonian tribes already knew that the combination of these plants produces effects that today are studied by anthropologists, psychiatrists and scientists around the world .
Just fifty years ago, it was deciphered what exactly this drink generates in the body: while chacruna contains DMT, a compound related to the "dream imagery" that causes visions, ayahuasca inhibits the enzyme that would break down this substance in the stomach and allow it to reach the brain.
